A Fiesta of Roses
Boy was I excited last night when the final seconds ticked away, and USC was once again named the ROSE BOWL CHAMPIONS…….a title they’ve held more than any other team in the nation. A title that is rightfully theirs. We beat the mess out of the Wolverines, and sent them home to lick their wounds.
Meanwhile, on the next channel, I was sure Boise State was creaming Oklahoma for the title in the Fiesta Bowl…….a game I was sure that nobody was watching but me. To my surprise, Boise was only up 8 points in the 4th quarter, and Oklahoma had the ball with plenty of time left on the clock (about 2 min). Next thing you know, Oklahoma scores a touchdown, makes the 2 point conversion, now the game is tied. No worries, Boise state is gonna take it down the field, score, game over.
NO NO NO, nothing’s THAT easy. The QB throws an interception, and OU runs it back for the touchdown. Damn, and now there’s less than a minute left in the game. I was sure it was over for Boise State.
Silly me, because on the final drive of the game, with Boise State facing a 4th and 18 situation, and minimal seconds on the clock, the QB completes a pass to a guy, who laterals it back to another guy who runs it in for the TD. Oh happy day! The game is tied once again, and now its time for OT.
So, Boise wins the toss, and they choose to go on defense first. OU’s first drive in OT goes to Adrian Peterson and he runs it in for the TD. Damn, that was quick. Well, Boise State, whatcha gonna do now? They struggle a bit at first, but they get a first down. It wasn’t as easy for them as it was for OU. There’s still hope, but not much. A few more struggles later, and the Broncos complete a pass for the TD. Whoa, this game just won’t end. In an effort to end the game, and get it over with, they go for the 2 point conversion. And with the trickiest of trick plays, Ian Johnson runs the ball in for the Win.

Oh man, the excitement that filled the stadium was tremendous, and I myself was a lil giddy. Not that I’m a Boise State fan, but anytime I can watch OU’s whiny players and fans suffer an utter disappointment of yet ANOTHER BCS bowl loss is one of lifes many pleasures.
And then to top it all off, Ian Johnson (Boise States star running back) proposes to his girlfriend, head cheerleader for Boise State. *eyeroll* Oh, what-ever! Yes, yes I’m hating. I’m hatin’ because if the marriage does work out, she’ll be set for life. Cha-ching! Meanwhile, I’m left to work and continue grinding in the hopes of makin’ something outta myself. *sigh* Why didn’t I seduce Carson Palmer when I had the CHANCE?!? *end bitter rant here. Congrats to the newly engaged couple!*
But while I was happy for Ian Johnson and Boise State, I was also pissed because they COMPLETELY overshadowed the triumph of the Trojans just hours before hand in the “Grandaddy of Them All”……the Rose Bowl. Suckas. Now everyone, including me, is talkin’ about this Boise State win over OU. Blah blah blah.
All this to say…….GO TROJANS!

Thats right Dwayne, silence the Haters!
What a great way to kick off the new year!

Fight On Trojans!!!
I did not get to see the game in its entirety *recovering from a champaigne haze the night b4* but in between commercials and me being comatose I held my two fingers high, shouting in slurred speech “BEAT the Wolverines”.
I did see the end/recaps of the Boise game, and all I could take away from it was that damn proposal. Now I’m not trying to start the New Year as a BBW (Bitter Black Woman) but how cliche is it that the Black football player stands to interview and has the YT cheerleader on his arm. I mean, I understand its Idaho and all, but are there No other Black Women in the state. And if she is lacking pigment, MUST she be a cheerleader?!?!?!?!?! Now I gotta be a hater cause I point out the obvious…Well, as Redman says…”I’ll Be Dat, I’ll Be Dat”
Mmm, girl, tell the truth. I was thinking the same thing, like “who IS this broad all on homies arm?”. VERY cliche. At least it was his girlfriend, and not random cheerleader X…….I guess. But my stomach definitely turned once or twice. Besides, homie is from San Dimas, CA. I know that means nothing to you, but those who know anything about San Dimas will agree that its no a surprise……at all. *sigh* C’est la vie. ~B. Good

Sooooooooooo am I the only black woman in America NOT surprised by the proposal. Have you SEEN Ian Johnson? It took me half of the game to even realize that HE was black. So not only is he the lightest black man in America, but he lives in BOISE! There can’t be more than 10 black women in the right age range for him in the whole state, and they’re probably just like black women in college everywhere else, trying to get an education, not a football player. Not necessarily sure if that’s the right approach, but hell it’s the one we tend to take.
LOL @ why didn’t you seduce Carson Palmer. C’mon B…Carson? Really? I think we could have found someone else on the team for ya. He may not have had a Heisman, but if he’s still on a roster, who the hell cares
)
LOL, I wasn’t really surprised by the proposal. I think I was more surprised that I wasn’t surprised, lol. And “how bout it” to the statement that black women in college are trying to get an education, not a football player. That was my downfall, lol. I shoulda been tryna get a football player; join the Song Girls or somethin’! And what’s wrong with Carson? Perhaps I shoulda just seduced Pete Carroll.

Pete’s a much better choice…Carson wasn’t cute. I dunno he just always seemed big & kinda dumb to me. I guess I’m just more of a fan of the new school Trojan football players (Matt, Reggie, Lendale, DJ) then the old school versions (Carson, Sultan, Mike Williams and nem). You could have at least seduced Troy Polamalu…I would allow that

My vote is for Pete and have Troy as a back up!
Now, for Ian Johnson. The truth of the matter is that I like the kid, met him once or twice. He played football with my younger brother. I don’t blame the proposal to the white cheerleader (although very clichéd) to him being in Boise (while I do agree with Reet, about the quantity of black women in the area).
Let’s keep it real. You are a product of your environment. This kid is biracial (mixed with what, I don’t know, never met his parents), grew up in San Dimas, attended Damien High School and then went to college in Idaho. HE NEVER HAD A CHANCE. And this is something I’ve had to personally come to grips in terms of my brothers.
Ideally, I’d love every strong black, educated male, to find his equally strong, beautiful educated black queen, but that’s just not a reality nowadays.
I just don’t understand why this story received so much media attention? I understand the whole football player, head cheerleader backdrop, blah, blah, blah; but REALLY, WHO CARES? There were much more important stories to discuss, such as, the beat down Michigan received courtesy of our USC Trojans.
For the record, who really cares about the National Championship Game this year? I know I don’t!
LOL, I don’t care about the National Championship either. I think OSU fans and Florida fans are the only ones who care. Actually, maybe its just the players.
