dress me

I need to find me a good tailor. Clothes just do NOT look good on me off the rack (that or I just don’t know how to pick ‘em, which is highly likely). And as my body is shrinking, its getting more and more awkward for me.

What I REALLY need is to holla at Tim Gunn and Veronica Webb so they can hook a sista up with some style. But wait, do they give you money to shop like Stacey and Clinton do? I haven’t really watched Tim’s show, but I love me some him!

So, I’m asking that EVERYONE (yes, you too) write to Tim, Veronica, Stacey, and Clinton, and convince them that I am a living, breathing, walking fashion horror, and need their services IMMEJIATELY!

That would be greatly appreciated.     Thanks in advance.

But anyways, bodies. Shapes. Sizes. Is anyone educated about these things? Here are my concerns:

  • I used to have a big booty, but I’m afraid I’m losing it. Or maybe I’m drowning it in my oversized/wrongly-shaped pants. How do you find pants to fit and accentuate the badunk?? Pockets? Pleats? Straight-leg? Boot-cut?

  • I’m much smaller up top than I am at the bottom. Shirts are ALWAYS too big in the chest when I buy them to fit around the bottom. I tried to rock this A-line shirt that is smaller at top and flares out at the bottom. Uh uh, it made me look preggers. So, they’re either too “baggy” or too “snug”.
    *sigh*
Is there any particular shape of shirt that I should be looking for? Maybe a certain material or pattern that evens things out?

Is there anything I should definitely stay away from? Plus, I have long legs, and a short torso. I don’t know if that means anything to anyone, but ummm, if you know how to dress that body, lemme know!

I know, I know. Pictures would help. Eh, do your best!

Is there any area of the body or a particular shape that you guys have the most trouble with when it comes to clothing?

Are you a fashion misfit turned pro? What helped you along the way?

Is there a good website, magazine, or book that one can reference?

Has anyone ever used a live fashion consultant or stylist?

Do you visit the tailor often? Is it costly? Worth the investment? Absolutely necessary? (You can’t believe that there are people who DON’T use a tailor?)

Are you just as clueless as I am??

    h.e.l.p.

P.S. Does anyone else buy lunch in the office cafe, and eat with their co-workers while enduring long, boring (and sometimes silent) conversation?

I usually have to tailor my pants because I’m short but have long legs but a big butt. Strange combo.

When I buy pants, I usually buy either regular length, or long and get them tailored to my specifications. Look for pants with no pleating or the wide legs that are in style. A slightly lower (but not lowrise) waistband will help them fit a little better as the bottom of your waist tends to be a little larger and can help make up some of the difference between the size you need to buy to fit your butt. A good tailor should be able to hem them and run a dart in dress pants that are too big in the waist. My tailor doesn’t charge me much… but then again I have to take him mostly all my wardrobe. For jeans and dress pants look for anything that has a little bit of stretch but isnt tight; it’ll help your pants kinda “hug” your frame without making you look like youre uncomfortable or drowning in clothes that are too big.

I dunno what to tell you girl! With legs as short as mine, I run in to problems all the time. I’ve just resorted to buying kids clothes. I guess it was all trial and error for me because I went a long time without buying pants once the Gap stopped making pants that fit me. God bless the ankle length. *sigh*

Tailoring is definitely the key. Especially since you’re smaller on top. That’s also my problem. But I cheat and wear a good bra with some extra padding to even out the proportions. I don’t exactly have advice, but I’m going to search my e-mail and send you a link to a site that asks your proportions and them makes suggestions. It’s really helpful.

Congrats on the weight loss, Mama!

Believe it or not, Essence does a great job at describing what’s best for different body types. you should subscribe if only for the fashion advice. They will tell you what is flattering based on size and shape. Try other girly mags as well, like cosmo and glamour. they give hints for long legs, short legs, or short torsos, etc. you may be able to look up this information on line.

about jeans, i find that the stretchier they are, the better. that way they can fit to every contour of your body without cutting straight into your tummy…and you know that is NOT cute. i think there is a parasuco jean store in NY. I bought a pair of jeans there 8 years ago and i can’t let those stretchy things go.

the clothes on the rack are made to fit NOBODY

I don’t even know what to tell you except maybe you should try some different stores–shake stuff up a little

Also, don’t be afraid to get stuff altered. The dry cleaner tailor person can do this for you. I had to have some pants let out because they were high waters on me but I’m glad I did it because my budget stretched a little further rather than me buying all new pants for work. They just don’t pay me enough for me to be poring over lucky magazine every month and shopping like a woman possessed.
